How to Convert an Employee Handbook into Training in Under 5 Minutes

A 5-step workflow for HR generalists to turn a 42-page employee handbook into editable slides, a knowledge-check quiz, and flashcards — with a worked example from a real handbook.

Kompyl Team

If you're an HR generalist staring at a 42-page employee handbook and a calendar full of new-hire onboarding sessions, this guide is for you. We'll show you how to convert that handbook into an editable slide deck, a knowledge-check quiz, and flashcards in under five minutes — using a worked example from a real handbook.

The 5-step workflow

  1. Export your handbook to PDF (or paste a URL if it lives in Notion / Confluence).
  2. Open the employee handbook training generator and upload it.
  3. Pick the outputs you want: slides, quiz, flashcards, facilitator guide.
  4. Wait ~60 seconds while the handbook is parsed and structured into modules.
  5. Download the editable PPTX, CSV, and Markdown files. Edit the bits you want to keep your voice on.

Worked example: the Acme PTO module

We took a sample Acme Corp employee handbook (42 pages) and ran it through Kompyl. Section 4.2 of that handbook says full-time employees accrue 1.67 PTO days per month, that unused PTO carries over up to 10 days at year-end, and that requests must be submitted in BambooHR at least 5 business days in advance.

What came out:

  • A 5-slide module titled "Module 4 — Time Off & Leave" with one slide per concept.
  • A 3-question quiz: "How many PTO days does a full-time Acme employee accrue per year?", "What is the maximum unused PTO that carries over?", and "How far in advance must routine PTO be requested?" — each with the correct answer marked and a one-line explanation pointing back to Section 4.2.
  • Flashcards: PTO accrual rate → 1.67 days/month and Carry-over cap → 10 unused days.
  • A facilitator note for the manager: "Spend 5 minutes walking through the BambooHR request screen with the new hire. Confirm they know the difference between PTO and sick leave (Section 4.3) before moving on."

Why this beats sending the PDF

A new hire who reads a 42-page PDF retains very little of it. A new hire who watches a 28-slide module, takes a 12-question quiz, and gets a corrected answer key retains the policies that actually matter on the job. The same handbook becomes active learning instead of passive reading — and you get a knowledge-check transcript proving they understood it.

Common gotchas

  • Long handbooks (60+ pages). Generation takes 2–3 minutes instead of 60 seconds. Worth waiting.
  • Branding. Free plan exports unbranded slides. Team plan applies your colors, fonts, and logo.
  • Editing voice. Kompyl summarizes — it doesn't impersonate your tone perfectly. Plan to spend 10 minutes editing the welcome and values slides.
